Blessing Buddha Statue Stone Sculpture

Dipankar is from "deepa" meaning lamp. He is the most celebrated and the first of the twenty-four Buddhas. When the time came for him to descend he entered the womb of one of the spouses of the king as the king was thought most suitable to be his father. When the queen was in the throes of childbirth she asked the king to send her to a lotus pond. As soon as she reached the spot, an island sprung up in the midst of the pond for the Bodhisttva to take birth. A large number of bright lamps manifested miraculously.

Like all other Buddhas, Dipankara has short curly hair, usbnisba, urna and long earlobes. Sometimes his right hand is in abbaya mudra. When a triad is formed he is flanked by two Bodhisattvas. Dipankara has always been popular in China.
Dharmachakra in Sanskrit means the 'Wheel of Dharma' In this mudra the thumb and index finger of both hands touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. The three remaining fingers of the two hands remain extended. The three extended fingers of the right hand represent the three vehicles of the Buddha's teachings, namely: 1-hearers of the teachings 2-solitary realizers 3-Mahayana or 'Great Vehicle'.
